Famous Quotes - Thomas Jefferson

President Jefferson, in one of his Famous Quotes, expressed the same opinion as I’m sure many recent presidents share. He once stated “Advertisements contain the only truths to be relied on in a newspaper.” Obviously, he experienced some bad press during his time in office. This serves to validate the sometimes used expression, “Some things never change.”. I guess history, at least in this case, backs up that statement. I don’t know, sometimes it seems the media wears the negative comments as a badges of honor. I’m not saying all media is irresponsible. It just seems like the press could take a more pro-active effort in reversing it’s image.

“An association of men who will not quarrel with one another is a thing which has never yet existed, from the greatest confederacy of nations down to a town meeting or a vestry.” is another of Jefferson’s famous quotes. Through it, Jefferson is speaking about the difference in opinions which will always exist in society. These differences are healthy, necessary even. We should know these debates are often more effective in accomplishing a task than if total agreement existed. The only necessity which must accompany the debates is sharing respect for the other’s views.
